NATURE: Mammals ii

The area is considered to be highly sensitive vertebrate habitat. The diverse habitats include the “Steep slopes and valleys” vegetation unit, “Arid bushveld on northern slopes” vegetation unit, some “Grassland with scattered woody outcrops” vegetation unit and “Acacia Thornveld in valley bottom” vegetation unit. The habitat types contain highly suitable habitat for 42 Red Data mammal species, 30 Red Data bird species and 3 Red Data reptile species.

The assessment and report on the vertebrate fauna done by Ecocheck Environmental Services, indicates the following: “Ecologically sensitive development within the transformed areas, and the ecologically sensible management of the highly sensitive areas of the study area can help with the conservation of the fauna and flora of the Sekhukhuneland Centre of Endemism. Such types of ecologically sensible developments that contribute to the holistic conservation attempts of natural areas outside of formally protected areas should be encouraged.”

Due to diversity of the Eco Reserve habitat a substantial number of African mammals will be found on the reserve.

Herbivores:

The patch-selective feeding spectrum of Southern African herbivores means that different animals will be found in different areas. The following herbivores will be encountered:
